A major gift just arrived at the Judith Wehrmeister Library at JAMS. Thanks to Bookfriends International NFP, a curated collection of over 6,000 books has been added to the bookshelves. Libraries from Bookfriends are special because they are carefully selected to include books at the proper reading and content level for high school grades, include groups of books for each subject area (math, history, geography, writing, business, etc.), a full set of a recent encyclopedia, and leisure reading in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
To make this shipment even more special, Bookfriends worked with Dr. Teresa Wasonga, JAMS founder/director, to include libraries for five more schools and one library in the JAMS area. These libraries were trucked out from Bookfriends’ northern Illinois facility in a shipping container, loaded onto a freighter, shipped to the coast of Kenya, trucked to Nairobi and then to JAMS where they were unpacked and disbursed.
Bookfriends provided two other special collections to JAMS. Now students at the local elementary school can walk up the hill to the Wehrmeister Library to read fiction and nonfiction books suitable to their age level. In addition, a collection for adults in the local community was provided so that JAMS neighbors can visit the school to consult books on parenting, health, nutrition, farming, and other topics.
