The new JAMS Resource Center (RC) opened in January of 2020, just as students were arriving to start the new school year. The Center houses the new computer lab, an expanded school library, a large community meeting room, and offices for the co-principals and teachers.
All of us at JAMS and Friends of JAMS give sincere thanks to our generous donors for providing funds for the computers, desks, bookshelves, and other furnishings for the RC and for tiling the floors.
Especially exciting for the students are the computer lab and the library. JAMS has hired a full-time computer science instructor and computer lab coordinator and the first computer literacy classes started in January. This year’s first-year students (Class of 2023) will be able to take computer science for four years and prepare for that subject in the national graduation exams, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). Students now in their second through fourth years at JAMS, while they won’t sit for the KCSE computer science exam, will be well-prepared for using computers at university and in jobs by the time they graduate.
The new school library is three times as big as the old library, which was housed in a classroom space. In 2020, Friends of JAMS is focusing on raising funds for new books to fill the shelves.
The RC also provides space to make running the school easier and more efficient. The teachers now have their own office space and the co-principals have offices in which to meet parents and do administrative work. In addition, there is a storefront through which to sell products produced on campus in the school’s micro-enterprises, such as bread, milk, eggs, and vegetables.
