We are thrilled to report that one of the first JAMS graduates has returned to JAMS as a teacher. Lynnet Awuor, Class of 2014, graduated from the University of Nairobi with a bachelor’s degree in science education in the fall of 2019. In January of 2020, she accepted a position as a teacher of biology and chemistry.
Ms. Awuor was an outstanding student at JAMS, serving as the first Head Girl of the school and earning excellent grades. She says, “I longed to come back to JAMS and be part of the staff so that I would also impact the lives of other students and also make them learn that education takes us to a brighter future. . . . Most students in the school are under scholarship and I thought that by seeing me as one who was like them sometime back, they could feel encouraged.”
More from Ms. Awuor
“During the time I was in JAMS I felt very special as a student with very many privileges given to the students. We chose on what to do and reasoned together with teachers on several matters. This does not happen in many schools in Kenya.
We also diversified on garden work, baking bread, cooking, making soap, and even cleaning our school compound. This made us not only to think on one line of academics but also to value other fields that are important in human life. I came out a versatile individual. At the university, I could make soap and sell it using the knowledge I got from JAMS. This helped me support myself with the little penny I got from it.
I longed to come back to JAMS and be part of the staff so that I would also impact the lives of other students and also make them learn that education takes us to a brighter future. Therefore, the girl child should take it seriously. Most students in the school are under scholarship and I thought that by seeing me as one who was like them sometime back, they could feel encouraged. My major work apart from teaching in this school is to advise these students so that they realize that A BRIGHTER FUTURE AWAITS THEM AFTER HARD WORK!!
God bless JAMS for making me who I am today. Indeed, helping the girlchild is useful in the society! Currently, I am able to pay school fees for my sisters and would long to sponsor other needy ones in future. I LOVE JAMS!!”
