Why sustainability?
JAMS strives to be environmentally healthy and economically efficient while offering opportunities for the girls to gain agricultural and business skills.
Through the dairy, greenhouses, poultry project, and piggery, the students raise their own food and sell the surplus to local markets.
By producing their own food, including some indigenous varieties, the girls can try innovative agricultural practices in a climate that is unpredictable and prone to drought.
The school’s building and well are partially powered by solar panels. However, existing solar panels are not sufficient to provide consistent power for the computer lab, freezer and other equipment in the dining hall, or lighting, while Kenya’s power grid delivers electricity to JAMS only about 60% of the time.
A new solar project will connect existing and additional solar panels to establish a campus-wide electrical system. The primary resource: Kenya’s plentiful sunshine.
You helped us exceed our goal last year. This year, we’ve increased our goal to $25,000 to meet the needs of increasing enrollment, ensure a consistent source of power, and lower the school’s expenses through a campus-wide solar power system.
